Is Peppermint Safe for Dogs? 5 Things to Know

A little fresh or dried peppermint is generally fine. Peppermint oil, pennyroyal mint and xylitol-sweetened mint products are the real dangers.

Peppermint soothes our stomachs and freshens our breath, but is it safe for your dog? Here’s what to know before offering anything minty.

1. Small amounts of the plant are generally safe

Small amounts of fresh peppermint leaves or dried peppermint are generally safe and mild. Safety depends on the form and the amount.

2. Peppermint oil is dangerous

It’s highly concentrated, and even tiny amounts can upset a dog’s stomach. Vomiting, diarrhea or sluggishness can mean too much; in severe cases it can affect the liver or nervous system. Ask your vet before using it for anything.

3. It may help mild digestion issues

Menthol can relax stomach muscles and may ease minor gas or bloating, but too much makes things worse.

4. Not all mint is safe

Pennyroyal mint is toxic to dogs. Always check the type of mint.

5. Watch for xylitol

Many peppermint gums and candies contain xylitol, which is extremely toxic to dogs. Even a small amount can be deadly.

The takeaway

A little plain peppermint plant is okay; oils, pennyroyal and sweetened mint products are not. Check with your vet before adding anything new.
