Papillon Breakdown: Personality, Problems and Perks

The butterfly-eared toy dog with a lion's spirit. Why people love Papillons, why they're not for everyone, and the health issues to screen for.

Named for the French word for butterfly, thanks to those wing-like ears, the Papillon is a compact dog with a lion’s spirit and royal elegance.

The pros

  • Brainy and eager to please: among the smartest toy breeds, and stars of dog sports.
  • Apartment-friendly with zing: lap-sized but energetic, loving games, walks and mental challenges.
  • Easy grooming: no undercoat means less shedding; a few brushes a week.
  • Loyal and loving: bred as companions to European royalty, they crave closeness.
  • Long-lived.

The cons

  • Fragile: rough play with kids or bigger dogs can injure them.
  • Hate being alone: expect barking or chewing if left too long.
  • Vocal: they’ll alert you to everything.
  • Health watch list: luxating patella, dental disease and progressive retinal atrophy. Screen early.
  • House training takes patience: small bladders plus a stubborn streak.

Is a Papillon right for you?

If you want a smart, affectionate little dog equally happy on an agility course or in your lap, yes. If you’re often away or want a quieter, independent dog, keep looking.
