Home Flea Treatment for Dogs: What Works and What to Skip

Flea combs, baths, hot-water laundry and vacuuming really help. Garlic doesn't, and is toxic to dogs. A safe at-home flea plan, plus when to see the vet.

Fleas make dogs miserable. They feed on blood, cause itching and allergic reactions, and can spread tapeworms to pets and people. Here’s how to fight them at home safely.

Editor’s note: the video covers several popular home remedies. We’ve kept the ones that are safe and effective, and flagged the ones that aren’t.

What works

Flea combing

Brush regularly and use a fine flea comb, dipping it into soapy water as you go so the fleas drown.

Bathing

A bath with a mild, dog-safe shampoo washes fleas off. It only removes the fleas on your dog at that moment, so pair it with the steps below.

Cleaning your home

Most of a flea problem lives in your home as eggs, larvae and cocoons. Vacuum regularly and wash your dog’s bedding in hot water.

Proven products

Over-the-counter sprays and powders can kill fleas on contact, and your vet can recommend prescription preventives that stop new infestations. Use dog products only on dogs: many dog flea treatments are dangerous to cats.

What to skip, or be careful with

  • Garlic: sometimes suggested to make dogs “less attractive” to fleas, but garlic is toxic to dogs and can damage red blood cells. Don’t feed it.
  • Essential oils: oils like lavender and cedarwood are often recommended, but concentrated oils can irritate skin, and many are toxic to cats sharing the home. Only use products formulated and labeled for dogs, and ask your vet first.
  • Lemon washes: citrus can irritate sensitive skin, and there’s little evidence it works better than a regular bath.
  • Diet changes: always check with your vet before adding supplements like brewer’s yeast.

The takeaway

Comb, bathe, vacuum and wash bedding, and treat every pet in the house at once. For heavy infestations, puppies, or dogs with scabs, hair loss or pale gums, see your vet for a prescription plan.
