Is a Bernese Mountain Dog Worth It? The Pros and Cons

A walking teddy bear with a short lifespan. Shedding, heat, separation anxiety and health costs, weighed against a famously loyal, gentle dog.

Imagine a fluffy, loyal companion that’s basically a walking teddy bear. That’s the Bernese Mountain Dog, with its striking tricolor coat and soulful eyes. But owning one isn’t all cuddles.

The challenges

  • Shedding: that gorgeous coat sheds a lot. Brush regularly unless you want a fur factory at home.
  • Heat: the thick fur makes them uncomfortable in warm weather; keep them cool.
  • Company: social butterflies, they can get anxious if left alone too long. Not ideal if you’re away a lot.
  • Space: they need room to stretch those big legs.
  • A short life: usually around 7 to 10 years, with risks of hip dysplasia and cancer, so regular vet checks are a must. Their size and medical needs add up financially.

Why they’re worth it

They’re incredibly loyal, love being part of the family and have a natural instinct to work and please, whether pulling a cart, doing agility or shadowing you around the house. They’re not great guard dogs; a stranger is more likely to get a wagging tail than a bark.

The verdict

If you’re ready for the commitment, including grooming, climate and a shorter lifespan, a Bernese Mountain Dog brings an enormous amount of love and joy.
